I am based in London, and completing a PhD at the University of Manchester, where I also teach across english and art history. My current creative / critical project is an attempt to build a new cultural history of working-class femininity in Britain, with a particular focus on creativity and innovation. This work encompasses writing, lecturing, archival research, and curation.
I am currently writing a book based on this material, titled MOTHERS OF INVENTION. This is scheduled for publication with Chatto & Windus / Penguin Vintage in early 2029. For all things book related, I am represented by Kat Aitken at Lexington Literary.
More generally, I write widely on class, gender, and popular culture. I’ve written for publications such as the Financial Times, New Statesman, and The Guardian, amongst others. I’ve been invited to give talks and papers at institutions such as Tate Britain, the Whitworth Gallery, and BFI Soutbank, and to share my research on programmes such as BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. I also write a substack, which you can subscribe to for free here.
In 2025 I curated From the Earth Comes Light: Women, Creativity and Mining for the National Coal Mining Museum for England. This exhibition is the first to explore the links between women’s creative practices and British coal. It was written about by the BBC, here.
I completed my undergraduate degree at Homerton College, Cambridge and an MSt at Hertford College, Oxford, which was fully funded by the Oxford English faculty. I am now fully funded by a President’s Doctoral Scholarship.
